Trip Description

A tailor-made journey into the soul of Bhutan, timed around one of the kingdom’s most meaningful celebrations. This intimate itinerary blends spiritual encounters, mountain landscapes, and living traditions, with a rare opportunity to witness the Punakha Tshechu inside the country’s most iconic dzong. From cliffside monasteries and quiet valleys to festive courtyards filled with masked dances and prayer, this journey reveals Bhutan as it truly is—deeply rooted, quietly powerful, and profoundly human.

DAY 1 – Arrival in Paro, Journey to Thimphu

Arrive at Paro Airport on one of the most scenic mountain flights in the world. Upon arrival, you are welcomed and begin your drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. If your flight arrives before midday, stop at Kuensel Phodrang, also known as Buddha Point, where a monumental Buddha statue overlooks the valley and offers a quiet introduction to Bhutan’s spiritual landscape. Continue to Thimphu and settle into your hotel. In the evening, take a relaxed walk through the town center and local market area, where daily life unfolds naturally among small shops and prayer wheels. Overnight in Thimphu.

DAY 2 – Visit Thimphu

Begin the day at the Memorial Chorten, a place of daily devotion where locals gather to pray and walk meditative circles. Continue to the Textile Museum, which offers insight into Bhutan’s weaving traditions, followed by the Zorig Chusum Institute, where students learn traditional painting, carving, and crafts. Visit the National Institute of Traditional Medicine, where ancient healing practices are still taught and practiced. In the afternoon, explore Tashichho Dzong, the seat of Bhutan’s government and monastic body, an impressive fortress that embodies both spiritual and civic life. End the day at the lively Bhutanese market. Overnight in Thimphu.

DAY 3 – Thimphu to Punakha via Dochula Pass

Depart early for Punakha, crossing the Dochula Pass at over 3,100 meters. On clear days, the view reveals a sweeping Himalayan panorama framed by 108 white chortens. Descend into warmer valleys and visit the Simtokha Dzong, the oldest fortress in Bhutan and an active center for Buddhist learning. Continue with a gentle walk through rice fields and villages to reach Chimi Lhakhang, known as the Temple of the Divine Madman. The path offers a close look at rural life and local customs. Arrive in Punakha and settle in for the evening. Overnight in Punakha.

DAY 4 – Punakha Festival Experience and Return to Paro

Today is dedicated to the Punakha Tshechu, one of Bhutan’s most significant religious festivals. Held within the majestic Punakha Dzong, the festival honors Guru Rinpoche and commemorates Bhutanese unity and victory. Monks and lay performers present sacred masked dances, ritual chants, and symbolic movements that carry spiritual meaning passed down through centuries. A highlight of the festival is the unfurling of the Thongdrol, a vast embroidered tapestry depicting Guru Rinpoche and Buddhist deities. Viewing it is considered a powerful blessing. After the festival experience, begin the scenic drive back to Paro. Along the way, visit the National Museum (Ta Dzong) and the Rinpung Dzong, known for its painted corridors and commanding presence above the valley. Stop at a traditional farmhouse for a glimpse into everyday Bhutanese life. Overnight in Paro.

DAY 5 – Visit Paro and Tiger’s Nest Monastery

Set out for the hike to Taktsang Monastery, famously known as the Tiger’s Nest. The trail climbs steadily through pine forests to a monastery perched nearly 900 meters above the valley floor. This sacred site is deeply tied to Bhutanese identity and remains one of the most moving places in the Himalayas. Return in the afternoon and enjoy free time to rest, explore Paro town, or simply take in the surrounding landscape. Overnight in Paro.

DAY 6 – Paro to Kathmandu

Transfer to Paro Airport and fly to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, you are welcomed and transferred to your hotel. Later, visit Kathmandu Durbar Square, once the seat of Nepalese royalty, where temples, courtyards, and palaces reflect centuries of Newar craftsmanship. The Taleju Temple stands as one of the square’s most important landmarks. Overnight in Kathmandu.

DAY 7 – Visit Kathmandu and Departure

Begin the day with a visit to Swayambhunath, one of the world’s oldest Buddhist stupas. Perched on a hilltop, it offers panoramic views over the Kathmandu Valley and a serene atmosphere filled with prayer flags and incense. The iconic eyes of the Buddha gaze outward, symbolizing awareness and compassion. Depending on your flight schedule, enjoy final moments in the city before transferring to the airport for your onward journey.

🌤 Best Time to Travel

Bhutan is best visited from late September to November when skies are clear and mountain views are spectacular.

Spring from March to May also offers beautiful landscapes and blooming valleys.

Winter months bring colder temperatures but also peaceful travel conditions and clear mountain views.

🚗 Getting Around

Travel within Bhutan is mainly done by road. Because of the mountainous terrain, journeys between towns and valleys may take longer but are scenic and memorable.

Paro is home to Bhutan’s only international airport, and flights into the country are limited.

💰 Currency and Payments

The official currency of Bhutan is the Ngultrum (BTN), which has the same value as the Indian Rupee.

Cash is still the most practical payment method in many places, especially outside the main towns.

🏥 Health and Altitude

Bhutan’s elevation is high, and some travelers may feel altitude effects. It is recommended to acclimatize slowly and drink plenty of water.

🛕 Religion and Cultural Etiquette

Bhutan is deeply influenced by Buddhism, and monasteries and sacred sites play a central role in daily life.

Visitors should dress modestly and behave respectfully when visiting temples and religious sites.

🍲 Food and Dining

Bhutanese cuisine is warming and often spicy, with rice, vegetables, cheese, and chili-based dishes forming the heart of many meals.

🎒 What to Pack

Layered clothing is recommended for Bhutan as temperatures can vary between sunny days and cool evenings.

Comfortable walking shoes are also useful for monastery visits and hillside walks.

Travel Tip
Carry some local cash for small purchases and monastery visits where card payments may not be available.
